Graphic Design, Web Design, Packaging, Social media management, copywriting

Allison Barnes brought me on to tackle a Shopify website redesign, create packaging for her new yarn subscription box, and to manage her social media. We've continued to work together and, in addition to ongoing social media and content services, I have worked on a variety of collateral pieces like postcards and ads, as well as working with her on marketing strategies.

She and her brand have a fun, bold personality, a great sense of humour, and a love for colour - this shines through in her social media and collateral!

Website

Allison's website is built on Shopify. I used their Narrative theme as the base structure and added custom code to add in their builder blocks functions on additional pages (this is currently only built into the home/landing page) and CSS styling to fine tune appearance and colours.

Social Media

I manage the main Allison Barnes Yarns social media channels, creating regular posts and graphics, as well as writing bi-weekly blog posts and sending out her weekly email newsletter. The content features lots of colour inspiration, images that show off her colourways and products, yarn-related humour, and educational posts.

Recent blog posts include: Why you should take the time to swatch, Caring for your handknits, and Tips for taming your stash.

Fibre Fix Subscription Box

Allison launched the Fibre Fix, her luxury yarn subscription service in January and wanted packaging designed for it. The original design, shown above, was a bold marbled pattern in her brand colours, inspired by the yarn dyeing process. On the inside of the box was a brand story blurb, information about yarn care, and her online channels.

Sadly, after the order placed, the printers we were working with us informed us that due to the full colour pattern, there would be small streaks due to the way their printers worked. We searched for an alternative solution or box printer but we were unable to find one that offered the small runs Allison was looking for at a reasonable price.

In the end, we pivoted and I adapted the design to a bold sticker design, which we printed on high quality vinyl and paired with plain white boxes. While it wasn't the funky design we started with, this solution offered an additional benefit of allowing her to affordably use multiple box sizes and scale this new product offering before investing high amounts of money into large runs of packaging.
